GDPR: How SurveyMonkey protects you and your respondents

At SurveyMonkey, we believe all responses are the property of the survey creator, which means we’re not in the business of selling individual survey responses that you’ve collected.

This principle is all the more relevant today, as the European Union adopts the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the new data privacy laws that give consumers more control over their personal data.

When it comes to GDPR, we’re not just complying—it’s something we believe in. And just as our focus on privacy didn’t start on May 25, it doesn’t end there either. Privacy and transparency are lifelong commitments for SurveyMonkey.

We wanted to go over some of the resources available to you, as a SurveyMonkey customer, to make sure you are compliant, as well as some of the ways we’re working to make privacy and transparency an ongoing commitment.

One place for all your legal information

We’ve redesigned our legal center from the ground up so that it’s more useful, easier to navigate, and includes everything you need to know about GDPR compliance.

The new legal center is more than a legal document. It puts all of our legal and privacy policies in a single place. Our new Privacy Basics page gives you a snapshot of how we handle personal information and data, while the page design makes it easy for you to find the exact areas of our policies that concern you.

Our updated terms of use also contain all the data processing terms required by our customers for GDPR compliance. Upon request business users can also access the Data Processing Addendum (DPA), a legal agreement that promises we’ll protect all personally identifiable and sensitive information we collect and store. If you are an Enterprise customer you can reach out to your account executive who will be able to confirm whether your agreement already contains GDPR terms.

SurveyMonkey is a little different from a lot of other businesses: The nature of surveys means we don’t just need to ensure the protection of our customers’ data, but also the data of their respondents.

We’ve created this page to give you all the resources you need to make sure your privacy is being protected and to ensure you’re looking after your customers’ data as well.

You get more privacy—and control

Data minimization and retention: Part of our pledge to GDPR is data minimization, which means we’ll only keep your data for as long as needed. It goes hand-in-hand with our data retention policies. We will delete any data that our users delete from SurveyMonkey within 90 days with the exception of certain limited data (e.g. invoices and security logs) which we are required to keep to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations. Get only the emails you want: We’re making it easier for you to opt out of the emails from SurveyMonkey that you don’t want to see, or keep only the ones you do. No matter what area of our business you’re getting messages from, we’ve made it easy for you to choose which ones you see—or choose to see none at all.

Privacy is woven into our culture: We have delivered training to all SurveyMonkey employees on how to responsibly handle the data of our users and we’ve appointed a Data Protection Officer to oversee data use at SurveyMonkey, in accordance with GDPR. What’s more is that all of our customer support representatives that support our European Union customers have received specialized training to make sure they can help you with whatever issue might arise.
